Baja Camp
AIDA MÉXICO TEAM TRAINING
The site of the camp, El Coyote, is a stone’s throw from the sea and perfectly sheltered all round by scrub, and the local village families’ just a little further inland. Between mangrove and acacia trees with the palm roof palapa shade and the front of the camp open to the cool winter northerlies or summer southerly Coromuel breezes off the sea it made for a very comfortable spot at any time of year. The palapa serves as classroom, eating and rest area enclosed by a animal-proof fence and a beautiful sea view open space.
After arriving in La Paz you will be taken to our base camp in the desert, which is about 100kms and 2:30hrs –3hrs away over mostly sand washboard roads.
The traffic and built up areas dwindle quickly, leaving a scene of desert scrub with a shimmering tarmac road stretching off into the distance, with a horizon of rising orange and green tinted hills. Very impressive, atmospheric, and very hot. The scenery grows more rugged and dramatic by the mile and for the duration of the drive, the sea of Cortez extends northwards to the right and the stony scrub covered hillsides to the left.
Accommodation is in two-man domed tents, which we provide. You must bring your own sleeping mats (not inflatable) and sleeping bags or sheet in summer
The camp is simple and practical. We gather dry wood from the desert around to use for cooking on an open grill and all refuse is separated into organic for composting, and non organic, for burning. All the food is kept on ice, which is systematically replaced every 4-5 days with trips into town. This means that we can attempt to cater to a certain amount of special food requirements. However, any real concerns about this must be specified well in advance. Fresh fish is obviously very much part of the diet.
For the duration of your stay and inclusive in the price we provide all food and water and cover the boat transportation for the courses with occasional options to dive sites further a-field, weather permitting.
There is no electricity or running water and hence the use of washing and shower facilities has to be economical as it is taken from a local semi-brackish well. The rustic outhouse is affectionately known as ‘the White House’ In order for the camp to function smoothly and hygienically everyone is invited to contribute to keeping the place clean, to water and wood collecting, journeys – so that by the end of the trip if you are not already an expert in self-sufficiency in a delicate environment you would have learnt to become comfortable with limited resources at your disposal! However, despite the lack of generators (we do have some solar panels) and nights lit by hurricane lanterns, the experience teaches one thing, that you don’t necessarily need them or miss them too much!

Points to Remember:
We do not cover any independent car hire charges but will make any necessary arrangements on demand and there is a charge made towards airport pick-ups and drop-offs and the road in and out of the desert.
You must bring your own sleeping mats (not inflatable) and sleeping bags or sheet in summer
We can help to arrange any overnights in La Paz , which will not be covered in our price. This can vary from $20 US – $200 US per room.
We will be living in an area remote from drinking water, electricity, and telephone (there is no mobile reception here), Therefore we hope you respect the need for water conservation for showering and generally an understanding of the way the camp works in order for it to stay clean and to function. The current record is 9.00 mins .
